It's still a po-faced pot pourri of action scenes struggling in search of a story, with preposterously poor shooting by the bad guys, dreadful decision making by the good gals and boys and a heroine in desperate need of a concussion test.Tyrant Virus, otherwise known as the t-Virus, is the general name given to a series of mutant Progenitor virus strains. This sixth instalment is a vast improvement on Retribution, but that's not saying much. However, I can't say that it's been a lot of fun. You've got to hand it to the Jovoich-Andersons in making a series that has spanned the undead divide from before 28 Days Later to Santa Clarita Diet and arguably helped bring about the birth of the likes of The Walking Dead. Plot wise, The Final Chapter magpies bits of everything from Terminator 2 to Alien3, Orphan Black, Beneath the Planet of the Apes and The Matrix Revolutions, while also bringing back some of the more crowd-pleasing set-pieces from the earlier films. She's helped with the former thanks to some headache-inducing, breakneck, lunatic editing which renders the countless fisticuffs as meaningless blurs. Once again she proves more than handy at chewing through the action scenes and dreary dialogue, while seemingly on a one-woman crusade to prove Vogue wrong that decollatege is dead. Jettisoning the Alice in Wonderland allegories that first accompanied the story, writer-director Paul W S Anderson instead puts wife Jovovich through something akin to the 12 Labours of Hercules here. However, she has just 48 hours before there will be nothing left to save and, in order to secure it, there's just the small matter of returning to place where it all began – Umbrella Corp's underground "Hive" in the devastated Raccoon City. With the unlikely help of the Umbrella Corporation's supercomputer "The Red Queen", Alice has learned that there's an airborne antidote to the deadly virus that would also destroy everything mutated by it. And yet it's now the highest-grossing horror series in cinematic history.įollowing on, but basically discarding most of the events of 2012's Retribution, this supposedly "final chapter" (a cruel crowd-baiting trick pulled by both Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees before) sees our heroine trying to save the world's remaining 4000 citizens before they're wiped out by the "infected". Audience fatigue set in long ago too, as this virtually plot-free franchise lumbered along with seemingly no end in sight.
It's understandable Milla Jovovich's Alice might feel that way, especially after six films and 15 years of battling the effects of the T-Virus.
